Copley is recognized as the greatest portrait painter in colonial America. He postponed moving to England until his father-in-law (Richard Clark) lost his tea in Boston (1774). He never moved back to the United States.

He is known for his use of color, texture, and light and shade.

His most famous work is Watson and the Shark.
