Peale believed that anyone could learn to paint. So he taught many of his 17 children
(and named many of them after famous artists). He also taught his brother James, who in turn taught
his own six children. One of these was
Sarah
Miriam Peale, perhaps the first woman in America to become a professional portrait
artist Raphaelle is famous for still lifes and miniatures while Rembrandt is known for portraits. C.W. Peale was also greatly interested in natural history. His Art arid Earth Society was a failure but it eventually resulted in the first school of art in America (Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts) and the first museum of natural history in the Western world (Academy of Natural Science of Philadelphia)
