Trumbull was famous for scenes
of the Revolutionary War (Signing of the Declaration of
Independence). He also painted four large murals in the rotunda of the U.S.
Capitol building. He was supported by Yale University at the end of his life they agreed to build a gallery to house his work, which resulted in the first university connected art gallery in America. Twenty five years after Trumbull died Yale became the first university in the U.S. to have an art school.
