M.C. Escher was born in Holland but lived in Italy and Switzerland before returning to his home country.  He did not do well in school, including mathematics.  (Throughout his life he was amused by the affinity that math teachers felt for him: "I never received a passing grade in math.   The funny thing is, I seem to latch on to mathematical solutions without knowing it.  Imagine - now mathematicians treat me as their long-lost brother, and most of the time, I don't even know what they are talking about.")

While visiting Spain in 1936, Escher was impressed by elaborate mosaic tile patterns.

He was interested in unusual of even impossible perspectives.  His creations included a creature known as the "Curl-up" or "Sausage Roll."  He named it Pedalternorotandomovens Centroculatus Articulosus.

Escher contrived impossible worlds and created fantastic metamorphoses.
