In 1932 she looked out
of the window of her San Francisco portrait studio and found herself staring at a bread
line. She walked outside to photograph it. Lange worked for the Farm Security
Administration to publicize the plight of the poor. Using no tricks or unusual techniques,
she caught people at moments that told about their lives and feelings. She was the best-known photographer of the depression.
