Frederick Remington (1861-1909)
Joslyn Art Mus.

Remington was born in New York state. He worked as a cowboy, prospector and posse member, but most of his paintings were done in his studio in the East.

Harper's Weekly purchased the first painting he submitted to them, but they altered it. A later painting was used (unchanged) on the cover.

Many of his works depict glorified or unrealistic situations

He was one of the few artists who was totally unimpressed with Europe. ("Say, I got two maiden aunts upstate who can knit better pictures than those!")
