Byzantine architects began to construct high domes to cover the area where the transept crossed the nave. Although many early attempts collapsed, the first successful high dome was placed over Hagia Sophia in Constantinople (Byzantium/Istanbul). The architects soon began placing domes anywhere they could. Mosaics were commonly used during this period. |
