Once we became a democratic nation, we turned to Greece for our architectural inspiration.  We certain did not want to continue with styles (such as the Georgian) which reminded us of our colonial past.  Public buildings through the country took on the appearance of Greek temples.

some characteristic features:
lintel - supporting feature above doors and windows
rotunda - round room covered by cupola or dome
portico - columned porch across front of building
use of Doric, Ionic and  Corinthian columns
Greek Revival style
