Gothic Architecture

Gothic architects reached to heaven with pointed arches and ribbed vaults.  Ceilings were supported by pillars instead of massive walls, so it was possible to open up huge spaces for stained glass windows.  Flying buttresses pushed in from the exterior to counteract the outward thrust of the ceiling.  Spires were added to the buttresses for decoration and to provide additional weight.
