Greek Architecture
The Corinthian Page

The Ancient City of Athens

The Greeks used a post and lintel construction for their major buildings.  This method is one of the simplest, but it is not especially efficient in spanning great distances.  (Too much weight in the middle of a lintel will cause it to collapse.)

Key features of Greek architecture include:
cornice - the decoration surrounding the triangular end of the roof
pediment - the triangular area at the end of the roof
column - supporting pillar composed of capital, shaft and base.

Styles of Greek architecture are called "orders."  Although these orders involve various distinuishing features, they are most easily identified by their column capitals.
