Since the post and lintel construction popular with the
Greeks was not able to span great distances, the Romans developed building methods using
the arch and the vault. An
arch provides a more open and lighter alternative to a solid wall, and the vault allows a
roof to cover a large space. The Romans also mastered the use of cement and concrete. |
