John Singer Sargent was born in Florence, Italy, to an eminent doctor/author and a Philadelphia socialite. He studied art in Florence and was also educated in Rome, Nice and Germany. When he was 18 he moved to Paris to study. While in his early 20s he traveled in France, Spain and Morocco.

He hoped to win acceptance at the Salon with his Portrait of Madam X (Metropolitan Museum of Art - image not available online) but the painting caused such a scandal that he moved to London. There he became the most sought-after portrait painter of high society. He had to hire additional servants and open a second studio.

When he tired of painting portraits he started traveling. He visited the United States. He was appointed to both the National Academy in America and the Royal Academy in England. He was accepted by other painters as well as by patrons.
