William Merritt Chase was the leader of the Younger Men. One of his favorite subjects was the elaborate interior of his New York City studio. He liked to paint coastal landscapes (Long Island), city park scenes and sophisticated portraits of wealthy people. Chase taught in New York City and at his own school on Long Island. His students included Charles Sheeler, Edward Hopper and Georgia O'Keeffe.
