Pyle produced stories and illustrations for Harpers Weekly and other publications. He was director of illustration at the Drexel Institute of Technology (Philadelphia) from 1894 to 1900. In 1900 he established the Howard Pyle School of Art in Wilmington, Delaware. He provided free courses in illustration. His work often involved American history or medieval folklore.
