Metropolitan
Lives at NMAA.Shinn preferred the fashionable world of uptown Manhattan. His dream was to place an illustration in the center of Harper's Weekly. He finally was given a meeting with the editor/publisher, who said he was looking for a color drawing of the Metropolitan Opera House at Broadway and 40th Street in a snowstorm. Shinn looked out the window and saw the snow falling, so he said that he had just such a drawing at home. He hurried out, bought a cheap box of pastels, went to the opera house, and made a sketch. He then worked all night in his studio to finish a pastel which was purchased by the magazine.
