Stuart Davis was the son of the Philadelphia Press art director who was a friend of Henri and who had hired Glackens, Luks, Shinn and Sloan (see Unit 5, Ash Can).  Davis attended Henri's school in New York and exhibited in the Armory Show at age 19.

In 1927-28 he did a series of works based on an eggbeater, rubber gloves and an electric fan.

Davis, who started teaching at the Art Students' League in 1931, was influenced by his love of jazz.
