| Hartley was influenced by the
Italian Impressionist Segantini rather than by the French. He used Segantini's
"stitch" (small, even embroiderylike stroke). 1912 to Paris financed by Stieglitz 1913 to Berlin; influenced by Blue Rider group (Kandinsky and Marc) 1914 returned to Berlin after brief trip to U.S.; found Germany in military mood; series based on German military emblems 1916-17 in U.S.; abandoned hot expressionist palette; began cubist abstractions in pastel colors 1918-20 Taos and Santa Fe 1920s wandered around France, Germany, New England 1932-33 Mexico He finally settled along Maine coast Hartley decided that true piety could be found only among the poor who are close to the land. His last paintings contained a religious and mystical note.
