Born into a wealthy family, Evergood was educated at Eton and Cambridge. Organized labor was making gains, resulting in opposition from management and authorities. When ten marchers were killed in a South Chicago march on Memorial Day, 1937, Evergood recorded the event in the meticulously accurate American Tragedy.
