Tanguy decided to become an
artist when he saw paintings by de Chirico. He received no formal training, experimenting
instead with automism. He would turn a canvas upside down to defeat interference from his
conscious mind. Tanguy created worlds inhabited by bone-shaped and amoeba-like creatures. His best-known work is Mama, Papa Is Wounded!
