While most artists
gravitated to the east coast, Tobey moved to Seattle where he became the leader of the
Pacific Northwest Painters. He studied in Japan in 1934 and associated Surrealism with the
practice of Zen Buddhism (reaching into the mind to clear the
conscious process and arrive at the inner recesses). Link to information about Zen.
