In 1941 Motherwell left his study of
literature and psychology to pursue painting. His first one-man exhibit was at the
Art of This Century gallery in 1944. He represented the United States a the Venice
Biennale in 1950 and the São Paulo Bienal in 1961. His best known series, Elegy to the Spanish Republic (1949-76), was inspired by the Spanish Civil War. Motherwell felt that it was the task of his generation to
"re-invent painting, its subject and its means."
